The Wisdom to know the difference:
As we pray the Serenity Prayer, we learn that there are some
things we can and cannot change. We can make some changes to
ourselves by ourselves, but to make other changes in ourselves
we need God's help.
By maintaining our conscious contact with God,
as the Eleventh Step teaches, "Sought through prayer and
meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we
understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us
and for the power to carry that out," we can have God's help in
maintaining the changes God makes in us.
With God's help, we can make a lasting change
in ourselves and in all of our relationships. These lasting
changes will lead to our recognizing and receiving daily
blessings from God and others. Likewise, we have discovered that
there are very few, if any, beneficial and lasting changes that
we can make directly in other people. God can make the changes
where we cannot. We need to pray for wisdom to know the
difference in all of our relationships.
With God's guidance and power, we can make
some changes in ourselves that will result in others changing
too. If we change our attitude, tone, voice, words, and actions,
others will respond differently to us.
We have learned to "Let Go and Let God" make
the changes that He sees fit to make in others and us, as we
continue to pray for others and ourselves. As God removes our
character defects, others will respond to us differently (and
hopefully in better ways). Each day, as we pray the Serenity
Prayer, we continue to pray for the Wisdom to know the
difference.
