The Serenity Prayer
Part 2

God, grant me the Serenity

"God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference."

God, grant me the serenity:  Many of us have discovered that we begin doing again the very things that we do not want to do (or have resolved not to do) the moment we lose our serenity or peace of mind.  We get anxious, and then for some reason we return to our bad habits to relieve our anxiety.  We have tried looking within ourselves for the source of serenity.  We have tried various techniques to relax or empty our minds of our concerns, but just as quickly as we thought we were emptying our minds our minds became filled with an even stronger temptation to begin walking once again down the road of destruction.

We have learned that the true source of lasting serenity is God, the Higher Power; indeed "OUR Higher Power."  So, rather than empty our minds, we slow down, focus, and pray "God, grant me the serenity."  Over and over again, we have found that prayer works, the serenity prayer works.  In answer to our prayers, God gives us that peace that passes understanding, a peace that is beyond understanding.  All we truly understand is God gives us that peace in answer to prayer, and many times that is all we need to know as we trust in God.  As we walk the Prayer Steps to Serenity, we know that we are drawing closer to God, who has promised to never fail us but always be with us.
