In working the First Step, we do not
need to admit that absolutely everything in our daily life is
unmanageable. What we do need to admit is that some aspects of our
life have become unmanageable, or certainly a problem for us (and
probably others). Thankfully, many begin working the 12 Steps before
they ever hit bottom! To admit that our lives had become
unmanageable is to admit, at the very least, that we are having
trouble controlling some of our behavior.
When we read the inspiring
stories in the Big Book, we read about people whose lives had become
almost completely unmanageable. The 12 Steps worked for them as they
worked the 12 Steps. If our lives have become completely
unmanageable (and many people's lives have become exactly that),
because we cannot stay away from alcohol or drugs or some other
compulsion or weakness, then the First Step promises a new beginning
for us. With God's help, through prayer, and through the 12 Steps,
we can overcome any problems or obstacles we face, if we truly want
the victory!
Let the First Step encourage you as
you take it and admit that your life has become unmanageable. God
will show you the way and how to take it. God will see you through,
if you will trust in God. God has given us the First Step to begin.
We can take it today.
